Newly found flight recordings show that one of the pilots on the doomed Germanwings flight was locked out of the cockpit and tried to “smash the door down” before the jet’s inexplicable descent into the French Alps, a report said.
The pilot exited the cockpit during the flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf and was could not get back inside despite desperately pounding on the door, according to The New York Times, quoting an official familiar with the plane’s cockpit recording.
“The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer,” an investigator told The Times.
“And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer.”
The plane quickly descended into the French Alps, killing all 150 people aboard. Investigators said there was no Mayday call heard.
“We don’t know yet the reason why one of the guys went out,” said the official.
“But what is sure is that at the very end of the flight, the other pilot is alone and does not open the door.”
