These are not the best of times for Lil Wayne and Cash Money Records co-founder, Bryan “Birdman” Williams.
We noticed the state of division in the Label late last year, with Lil Wayne going all out on Twitter to rant and censure Cash Money on misgivings in his contract which he termed a “prison sentence”. It must be remembered that he’s released all his albums on Cash Money Records, as well as going further to set up his Young Money movement on same platform. So it’s safe to say things were on the rosy side prior to this.
But we noticed the switch in relationship up there at Cash Money when Wayne hit ‘twittersphere’ last year with these:
“To all my fans, I want you to know that my album won’t and hasn’t been released bekuz Baby and Cash Money Records refuse to release it”.
“This is not my fault. I am truly and deeply sorry to all my fans but most of all to myself and my family for putting us in this situation.”
Lil wayne went on and on with tweets showing his fury over how much his talent and creativity had been impeded by the label, going further to apologize to his fans he said;
“I want off this label and nothing to do with these people but unfortunately it ain’t that easy, I am a prisoner and so is my creativity. Again, I am truly sorry and I don’t blame ya if ya fed up with waiting for me and this album. But thank you.”
But, in spite of everything, Wayne looks likely to remain on the label if the right price is right.
The entire relationship degenerated when Wayne hit the studio in December of 2013 to record “The Carter V” album, after which Cash Money failed to pay him the sum of $8m as earlier agreed. Following that, the label also failed to furnish a $2M fee upon the completion of the album last year. This made Wayne livid upon which he threatened to press charges to the tune of $51M.
It is widely speculated that Universal –Cash Money’s financier– is stepping into the situation, with the hope of getting Birdman and Cash Money to offset the money owed Wayne. If this happens, it would be almost impossible for Wayne to contravene his contract by walking out and all of that. We shall be updating as events unfold in this light.
