The teacher who was caught in an almighty row about racial segregation has been told she can return to work on Friday. The Labour Court has ruled in favour of Elana Barkhuizen, who was suspended from her role as a primary school teacher at Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke.

Two weeks ago, a photo of children in a Grade R class seemingly separated by race took the internet by storm. An immediate inquiry was lodged, and found that Barkhuizen was ultimately responsible as she had taken the picture. However, it was revealed that the class was not hers.
Supported by trade union group Solidariteit, she spoke at a press conference where she slammed “political opportunists” for manipulating the situation to their advantage. But now, Elana Barkhuizen has had the last laugh and she can return to her teaching role before the end of the week.
