Danny Welbeck was the star of the show as England began their European Championships qualifying series with a win over Switzerland.
England were away at Switzerland and were feeling the pressure of being without Daniel Sturridge. And in the first half, England struggled to create chances and to find cutting edge that they so desperately needed and Switzerland looked good on the ball. The first half ended goalless much to the disappointment of both sets of fans. In the 58th minute, England launched a quick counter attacking move that involved the team captain Rooney, and Raheem Sterling who played a beautiful square ball into Welbeck who tapped into an empty net from just inside the six yard box. In the 94th minute, Welbeck finished following Rickie Lambert’s pass following a period of sustained pressure by the Swiss.
England would be glad to have taken all three points from their first qualifier and they can look forward to the future with optimism. And Arsenal fans would feel a sense of pride following the performance of their latest acquisition.
