On Tuesday, in a statement, President Barack Obama described Brown’s death as “heartbreaking”. the president went on to appeal for calm, stating that the FBI were investigating the tragic incidence.

“I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.”

Many African-American residents of Ferguson have rejected the official response to Brown’s death. They say it is insultingly inadequate. Let it be noted that Ferguson is a city of about 21,000 people, having 67% of the population as black. Yet 94% of the police force and other prominent figures in the local government, even the mayor – are white.

“I got seven brothers,” said Brittany Troupe, 24. She works at Home Depot and studies fine art in her spare time. “Are they going to be killed by the men who are supposed to protect and serve them? It hurts my heart.”

“We want this man arrested, in jail, and charged for murder,” says the Rev James Stewart, pastor of the nearby Murchison Tabernacle church. He said this in a town hall meeting and got a loud applause by the audience there. Brooks went on to further accuse the police of a “subculture” of racism.

Michael Brown was killed by an un-named police officer on Saturday afternoon after he shot him multiple times. Brown was 35 feet away from the police officer and his vehicle.
