Didier Drogba is set for a return to Chelsea in a player-coach role following the expiry of his contract at Galatasaray, according to Evening Standard football writer Simon Johnson.

The Blues hero is a free agent after his 18-month contract in Turkey came to an end at the end of the season, and is reportedly likely to complete his move back to Stamford Bridge within the week.

Johnson told Kick Off: “Both parties are keen to finalise personal terms and Didier will arrive as a third striking option with a coaching role at the club.

“Drogba’s heart is still in Cobham, even though he’s been away at Galatasaray, his family still live there and his son is in Chelsea’s academy.

“So it’s definitely a move he’s looking to do, whether it’s the right move…I think Chelsea have looked around for someone as a third striking option to work with Costa and Torres, and have clearly decided to go with someone they know, who is tried and tested at the club.”

Speaking of Torres, the Spaniard has been strongly linked with a move back to Atletico Madrid this summer having failed to live up to his £50million price tag since switching from Liverpool three years ago.

But despite suggestions he could return to his homeland, Johnson says Chelsea still expect the forward to remain at Stamford Bridge this season.

He added: “From what I understand with Torres, I don’t thing Chelsea have been able to generate any interest for him.

“While the reports have suggested Atletico have sniffed around regarding Fernando’s future, I don’t think a deal is actually in the offing and Chelsea expect him to be a part of the squad next season.”
